Technology Review´s article Augmented Reality Apps For Your Cell Phone is an interesting read as it provides examples on how Augmented Reality, or AR, is being used now.
AR is actually the continued development of Virtual Reality, VR, that was started back in the late eighties. Because VR relied on expensive single purpose equipment, it was not practical for everyday computer users. By developing AR apps for cell phones, using off the shelf equipment, has put the power of VR in the hands of smart phone users. This has resulted in renewed interest in VR and development of new advanced applications that are location aware as well as other applications that will enhance every day life.
